Hex tile, subway tile and encaustic patterns deserve careful treatment. Here is how to repair and clean vintage tile gently.
Nashville has beautiful old tile: white hexagon bathroom floors, black and white checkerboards, glossy subway walls and encaustic patterns in entries and fireplaces. This tile was built to last, but its grout and sealants are long past their prime. Modern, aggressive methods can ruin old glazes and patterns, and many original tiles cannot be replaced, so every repair matters.
Our approach to vintage tile is conservative. We test cleaners on a hidden spot, use gentle products and tools and remove old grout carefully to protect brittle edges. We match grout color and joint width to the era. Loose pieces are reset with compatible materials, and missing tiles are replaced with salvaged or reproduction pieces when possible. We explain what can be saved and what cannot, and avoid surfaces and sealers that would change the look of period tile. The goal is to keep the character while making the surface sound.
