Loose Tile Reattachment

Hollow, rocking and popped-up tiles lifted, cleaned and set back solid so they stop cracking and stop collecting water.

Loose tile announces itself with a hollow sound underfoot, a slight rock when stepped on or a tile that has popped up at one edge. It is a repair worth making quickly, because loose tile cracks, chips and lets water into the bed below. A loose tile in a shower can mean water is getting behind the wall. A few loose tiles in a floor often have a common cause, such as poor coverage of thinset, a damp slab or movement.

We find loose tiles by sounding the floor and wall, mark them and lift them carefully so they are not damaged. We scrape off old adhesive, clean the back of the tile and the bed, fix any moisture or leveling problem and reset the tile with fresh thinset and full coverage. Grout and sealant are renewed around it. If many tiles are loose, we explain what that may mean for the substrate before suggesting larger repairs. A short visit can save an entire floor.

Questions

Loose Tile Reattachment FAQ

Why is my tile hollow underneath?

Thinset may not have covered the back of the tile fully, or the bond has failed from moisture, movement or age.

Can I walk on loose tile?

It is best to avoid it. Walking on it can crack the tile.

Does loose tile mean a bigger problem?

A few can be isolated. Many in one area suggest substrate or moisture issues.

Can you fix loose tile in a shower?

Yes. We also check for moisture and reseal the joints.

How long before I can use the floor?

Usually a day for foot traffic. We give you exact timing.
