The workhorse for floors and wider joints: cement grout with fine sand for strength and shrink resistance.
Sanded grout is a mix of cement, pigment and fine sand. The sand bulks up the mixture so it does not shrink or crack as it dries in wider joints. That makes it the standard choice for floors and for wall tile with joints wider than about an eighth of an inch. It comes in a huge range of colors, is easy to find and costs less than epoxy or urethane.
Its weak point is porosity. Cement grout absorbs liquids unless sealed, and the sand gives its surface a slight texture that holds dirt. It can scratch soft or polished tile surfaces such as some marble, glass and metallic finishes. Sealing at installation and again every year or two keeps it cleaner and more resistant to stains and mildew. Properly mixed and cured, sanded grout is strong, long-lasting and easy to repair.
