Grout Calculator: How Much Grout Do I Need?

Enter tile size, joint width and depth and your area to see pounds of grout, bags, sealer and caulk to plan for.

These tools give planning-level estimates from typical values and the details you enter. They are not quotes, designs or engineering, and results depend on your actual tile, grout condition, moisture, access, site conditions and local rules. Only a site visit can confirm what a project needs, and we give you a written scope and price before any work begins.

How it works

Four quick steps.

  1. 01

    Measure the area

Length times width of each floor, wall or backsplash, in feet.

  2. 02

    Enter the tile

Tile length, width and thickness, plus the joint width.

  3. 03

    Choose the grout

Cement-based grout or epoxy changes the yield.

  4. 04

    Read the order

Pounds of grout, bags, sealer and caulk, with a waste allowance.

Tips

  • Wider joints and thinner, smaller tiles use much more grout.
  • Buy one extra bag from the same lot so the color matches for later repairs.
  • Epoxy grout is mixed in small batches, so plan for a little more waste.
Questions

About this tool.

How is the amount of grout worked out?

It comes from the tile size, the joint width and the tile thickness, which set how much empty joint there is per square foot.

How much extra should I order?

Ten to fifteen percent is a common allowance for waste, uneven tile edges and cleanup.

Does it work for mosaics?

Yes. Enter the sheet tile size and a narrow joint. Small tiles use more grout per square foot.

Is the answer exact?

No. It is a planning figure. Your tile and the product label are the final word.
