Travertine Restoration

Pitted, dull and stained travertine cleaned, filled, honed and sealed so floors and showers look rich and even again.

Travertine is warm, creamy and full of character, and it comes with natural holes and voids that were filled at the factory. Over time that filler wears out, dirt packs into the pits, acidic cleaners etch the surface and grout lines darken. Floors that once looked like a Tuscan villa can look blotchy, rough and dirty. Because travertine is soft and porous, it needs more careful treatment than harder stones.

We restore travertine by cleaning the surface and grout, removing old filler and dirt from the pits and refilling holes with color-matched filler. Then we hone the surface to an even finish with diamond abrasives, level slight lippage between tiles where possible and clean again. The stone is sealed with a penetrating sealer chosen for the finish. Showers and floors need different handling, and we explain which finish and sealer suit each room. We also recommend a simple, safe cleaning routine so the results last. Samples of filled and unfilled travertine help you choose a finish with confidence.

Pits refilled

Old filler and trapped dirt are cleaned out and holes are refilled with matched material.

Even honed finish

Diamond abrasives level and smooth the surface, removing etching and wear.

Grout lines renewed

Dark grout lines are cleaned, recolored or regrouted to suit the stone.

Sealed for the room

Sealers are chosen for floors or showers and applied after the stone is clean and dry.

Questions

Travertine Restoration FAQ

Why does my travertine have holes?

It is a natural feature. Fillers are used at the factory, and they wear out over time.

Can old travertine look new?

Often very close. Cleaning, filling, honing and sealing make a big difference.

Should travertine be polished or honed?

Honed is the usual choice for floors. Polished is possible for some tiles but shows wear.

Can I use vinegar on travertine?

No. Acids etch travertine. Use neutral stone cleaners.

How often does travertine need sealing?

Often every one to two years, depending on use.
